Addiction Running in the Family

Addiction Running in the Family

There have been large amounts of research into the factors and causes behind addiction.  And this has led to the discovery of many different things that play a part in the development of addiction.  For instance, there have been certain environmental factors that have been shown to play quite a large role in the development of addiction.  Another large factor that has shown to have an influence is the genetics of an individual.

The Factors Behind Addiction

There have actually been several studies that have displayed the connection that genetics have in the development of addiction.  Of course, this does not mean that every person who has addiction in their genealogy is going to fall into addiction themselves.  The reality is that while genes can potentially create a predisposal to addiction, there are several other factors that can play a role as well.  There really is no sole root or cause of addiction, but rather an array of factors and situations that can make a person more likely to fall into it.

Research and studies have shown that there is not one single gene that is behind the development of addiction.  Rather, there are several genes that have shown to have some potential link, or that are more commonly found in those that fall into addiction.

As mentioned above, genetics are not necessarily the sole cause of addiction, as there are other factors that can work in conjunction or exacerbate the genetic factor.  For instance, a person who has some genetic predisposition to addiction could also live in a negative environment of poverty or abuse, which could make them more likely to seek refuge in substances.  But, then there are others who have an extensive family history of addiction, and yet never fall into it themselves. This could potentially be because they may not have received the genes, as well as being able to rise above their pre disposal.
