Build Proper Support During Addiction Recovery

Build Proper Support During Addiction Recovery

Overcoming addiction can be one of the greatest accomplishments in an individual's life, as it is often not easy to do.  Though, one thing to always keep in mind is that recovery can often be something which needs to be continuously worked on and maintained.  One major factor within this is building a proper support network once in recovery.

What is a Support Network?

A recovery or support network is essentially a group of individuals with whom the individual is connected that can help them to support and maintain their recovery.  This can include a variety of different people within the individual's life.  And who the person chooses to keep in their recovery network can vary.

A recovery network can include people such as:

  • Family - Family members can be some of the greatest people to have in one’s recovery network.  Whether it be parents, siblings, etc, they all know the person intimately and this allows them to help the individual that much better.

  • Recovery Groups - A person can build a great support network from those met in recovery groups.  These groups consist of individuals who are seeking to overcome their addictions themselves, and they can all help to support each other.

  • Therapist or Counselor - If a person continues treatment via outpatient or some other method, their counselor or therapist could be considered a valuable part of their support network.

As mentioned above, recovery can take some work to maintain, and a proper support network can help encourage and motivate a person along their sober path.  Recovery and life in general can be difficult at times, but a support network gives a person somewhere they can reach to for help and guidance, which can allow them to work through difficulties. People like those in the above list want to see the individual succeed, which makes them invaluable support to have in their life.
