Connecticut Rehab Centers Battle the Death Toll of Fentanyl

Since addiction is a progressive disease which tends to worsen over time, many addicts begin to seek a stronger high to satisfy their needs and cravings.  This is compounded by the fact that over time a person’s body will build up a tolerance to the substance they are consuming regularly.  This causes addicts to up the dosage of their drug of choice, or move to a new, stronger drug that will provide the high they are looking for.  This search for a more potent high many times leads opiate users to fentanyl.

Connecticut rehab centers have been seeing a large increase in the amount of individuals using fentanyl, and it has been taking lives as quickly as it catches on.  In fact, according to an article from WTNH News 8, “In Connecticut, drug related deaths have spiked and are expected to go higher. Records from the Medical Examiner’s Office show fentanyl was linked to 37 deaths in 2013 and 188 in 2015. The most recent data shows 83 fentanyl related deaths in 2016, but the total projected number is expected to be 332, more than doubling 2015 numbers.”  As shown here, the deaths continue to increase each year, which could be indicative of more addicts of other opiates moving over to this more potent drug.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid painkiller that is similar to, but many times more powerful than heroin, as well as morphine.  Fentanyl tends to be reserved for patients with extreme, chronic, or post surgical pain.  Common methods of delivery into the system are patches, injection, pills or powder.  It can produce a variety of effects upon the person, including but not limited to euphoria, drowsiness, and nausea.  The much higher potency of it than that of its counterparts has led addicts to move to this when other opiates are no longer producing the desired effects.  While it was created to be prescribed and used for medical purposes, this has not stopped individuals from creating this hellacious drug in makeshift home laboratories as well.  This homemade fentanyl is generally very crude and tends to be even more deadly than pharmaceutical grade.

Since fentanyl is such a potent drug, and can create an extremely strong dependency, detox from it can be a very arduous process.  Connecticut treatment facilities are there to help ease that process as much as possible.  Withdrawal from fentanyl can produce symptoms such as chills, joint or muscle pains, sweating, increased heart rate, and diarrhea.  Connecticut drug rehabs have also been seeing an influx of individuals who have combined fentanyl with other illicit drugs.  A news article from the Hartford Courant speaks of heroin death rates increasing in Connecticut in 2015 largely due to individuals overdosing from a combination of heroin and fentanyl.

Connecticut rehab centers offer a variety of different kinds of programs.  Finding a treatment center that is going to fit the individual can play a large role in their long term recovery.  Many centers deliver programs that are based on a “one size fits all” mentality, but this is the completely wrong approach for addiction.  Every individual is different and needs their own crafted treatment program.  When searching for the right Connecticut treatment program for yourself or a loved one, remember to keep this in mind.
