Georgia  Drug Rehab Centers and Programs

Georgia has definitely seen its fair share of individuals struggling with addiction.  Just as in many other areas, there has been quite a rise in prescription drug abuse in Georgia.  Georgia drug treatment centers have worked vigilantly to attempt to resolve this problem.  The state also started the PDMP (Prescription Drug Monitoring Program), in an attempt to better monitor the situation and the amount of these drugs being prescribed and dispensed.  According to CBS46, part of the PDMP is pharmacists having to weekly report controlled substances being given out, which has resulted in some individuals being cut off from these drugs when found out how much they are receiving.  This may help remedy the massive amount of these being doled out.  Another possible result would be that individuals who are no longer able to get these drugs, may then possibly seek treatment.

The Shortage of Opioid Treatment Clinics in Georgia

There are multiple different ways to treat addiction, and new ways coming out every few years.  Being that everyone is particular in their addiction and what brought them there, people find their success in different ways.  One of these types of treatment are outpatient opioid clinics.  These are clinics in which individuals go to receive medications that function as a replacement to their current drug they are struggling with.  An example of these would be a methadone clinic, where a struggling individual could go to start a methadone program, in which they receive a certain dosage every day or week.  This is meant to be a substitution to get them off of the opiate they are addicted to.

While replacement types of treatment like this do have their uses, they are not an end all.  Due to the fact they are placed on another medication, some end up addicted to this instead.  It can tend to just be replacing an addiction with another addiction for some.  One of the biggest areas of treatment this type of clinic and medication can be helpful in is detox.  These types of medications under proper supervision can make detox a much easier process, instead of dealing full on with the pains and symptoms of withdrawal.  While there will generally still be some type of discomfort in withdrawal, medications can ease it.

Withdrawal symptoms can include things such as:

●Aches

●Anxiety

●Sweating

●Sleep trouble

●Cramping

●Nausea

In June, Georgia placed a cap on the amount of these clinics allowed to be opened.  As far as the reason behind this, an article from NPR (National Public Radio) states, “The reason for the moratorium, according to state Sen. Jeff Mullis, a Republican, is the state needs to figure out why so many opioid treatment programs have opened in Georgia.”  This could limit many individuals from receiving assistance with these programs.  At the same time, due to the amount of people that will not be able to use this method, it furthers the need for Georgia drug rehab facilities.
