Iowa Drug Rehab Centers

A guide to resources in Iowa

Iowa Drug Rehab Centers

The effects of addiction can be seen across the entire nation.  And while it is improving in some areas, it is also worsening in others.  Iowa, like many areas, is struggling with a lot of individuals who have an addiction to opiates.  The large part of Iowan addicts tends to be addicted to either prescription painkillers or heroin.  Fortunately, Iowa drug rehab centers are equipped and prepared to handle these types of addictions.

The Progression of Opiates

An addiction to opiates can many times tend to be very progressive.  This means that as these drugs are continually used, the addiction can become worse, or elevate to harder drugs.  This is not the case for everyone, as there are many who are prescribed painkillers for painful conditions and only use them until they no longer need them.  But often there are those who begin to use the painkiller too long, or too much and their body builds a higher and higher tolerance and dependency.  This brings them into a state of having to use continually higher amounts to produce the same effect.  There are many who may also then move to using heroin, which can bring about the same effects as painkillers but is cheaper and more readily available.  According to an article from the Gazette, “Professionals who treat substance-use disorders increasingly report Iowans who begin taking pain pills for legitimate health problems become addicted to the medication over time, Lukan said, and eventually switch to heroin when they can no longer afford the medicine.”

Iowa Overdose Rates Significantly Lower

A positive fact that has shown in Iowa this year is that the overdose rates have dropped significantly from previous years.  WQAD8 News states that heroin overdose rates went from 5 in 2009 to 20 in 2013, but have now decreased down to 15 in 2015.  As well as painkiller overdoses were 77 in 2013, and have been almost half of that in 2014 and 2015.  A state official attributes this to more training and experience of police and emergency response units, as well as they are now carrying naloxone, a drug which can save someone’s life during an overdose.  Decreasing these rates is an important first step toward reducing the addiction rates, being that once these individuals are stabilized from overdose, they can then be placed into an Iowa treatment center.

Handling Addiction with an Iowa Drug Rehab Center

Realistically, the most effective and successful way to overcome addiction is through attending inpatient rehabilitation.  Especially when it comes to opiates, which can bring about a severe physical dependency and require a proper detox.  Though, choosing the right treatment center is critical to having the best chance of success.  There are many Iowa drug rehab centers out there, and some are going to be much less comprehensive than others.  Finding a program that can offer a proper assessment, followed by a tailored program for is the best bet.
