Long Term Drug And Alcohol Rehab

Addiction recovery is a process which can sometimes be quite long. When a person has been using substances for years, it can take some time to be able to fully overcome addiction to a point where sobriety is less precarious. Treatment should be of enough length that it allows the person to get through the initial precarious period of sobriety, and give them the tools to stay sober when out of treatment. This is why long term drug rehab can be extremely valuable when it comes to addiction.

The time limits that many rehabs put on treatment is often counterproductive to the best chance at long term sobriety. Addiction is not a condition that has some sweet spot length of time that it requires treatment. It varies person to person, and takes however long it takes for that person to overcome their dependency. Treatment centers offering simple 30 day programs that ship the person out once that time period is over can often result in the person relapsing because they needed further treatment to reach a good point.

Typically, programs which set the bar at 30 days or some other time limit tend to do so because of one major factor - insurance companies. Insurance companies have general limits to the amount of days of addiction treatment that they are willing to pay for, which averages about 30 days. Insurance is a major way that many use to pay for treatment, as it can sometimes be expensive without insurance. These insurance limits caused many centers to adjust to around that time period. And treatment professionals try to look at the fact that providing some help, even if not enough, is better than none at all.

The Longer the Better

Research seems to back the fact that the longer the treatment, the better. According to an article from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Generally, for residential or outpatient treatment, participation for less than 90 days is of limited effectiveness, and treatment lasting significantly longer is recommended for maintaining positive outcomes.“ When a person is in treatment longer, they have a better opportunity to be able to address deep seated issues and difficulties, as well as develop better understanding of their addiction and how it came about. In a 30 day program, detox can take a large portion of this time by itself, even up to two weeks. So, when a person begins their actual recovery program, they may only have another 14 days within the center, which is barely enough time to accomplish anything long lasting for their recovery.

Long term treatment also allows the person a chance to truly get to know themselves sober once again, as well as gain the tools necessary to be able to tackle the day to day world. When a person who has barely had any treatment is then tossed back into the quick flow of life, they may become overwhelmed and end up relapsing. A long term facility provides the person a safe environment that is conducive to their recovery, and provides a space for their body and mind to heal from the horrendous effects of addiction.
