A guide to resources in Michigan

Michigan Drug Rehab Centers

Over the years, there has been an emerging drug problem within Michigan.  The state has been dealing with a vicious battle with the illicit and extremely dangerous drug methamphetamine, also called crystal meth.  Meth can be a hazardous drug in multiple ways, since not only is it detrimental to the user’s health and mental state, but the manufacture of it is also extremely dangerous.  Since meth is manufactured in crudely constructed laboratories, with volatile combinations of chemicals, several risks arise in this realm as well.  The individuals who are manufacturing meth run the risk of explosions, burns, as well as chemical fume inhalation.

Not only is meth use in Michigan increasing, but the amount of home constructed labs creating it has as well.  According to a news article last year from the Detroit Free Press, “Since 2013, Michigan police officers have found more than 1,500 meth labs and dump sites for lab equipment and the dangerous chemical byproducts that come from producing the highly addictive stimulant.”  With numerous of these home constructed labs, as well as dumping sites popping up, not only do these people create dangerous situations for themselves, but also begin to put the public at risk as well.

Meth is a highly addictive substance, and the use of it can develop into a severe dependency and addiction.  Meth is classified as a stimulant and produces a slew of different effects upon the person.  It induces a strong euphoria that is enjoyable to the user, which is what brings the person repetitively back to using again.  As with many types of drugs, the individual builds a tolerance after long term or repetitive use, which then requires them to use larger amounts of meth to produce the same effect that they had experienced previously.

The Side Effects of Crystal Meth

Meth can produce some of the most serious side effects and health conditions over both short and long term use.  Some of the side effects of meth can include, but are not limited to:

  • Tooth Decay

  • Psychosis

  • Violent Behavior

  • Loss of Memory

  • Cardiovascular Issues

  • Major Organ Damage

  • Dermal Lesions

The damaging effects that meth can bring about poses quite a challenge for Michigan rehab centers.  Since detoxing an individual from meth can be a very intense period of time, Michigan rehab centers have to be vigilant during the monitoring of the individual.  Post detox, once they begin a treatment program, can also be a very difficult period of time.  Meth can create such a profound addiction, that the treatment period for meth can be quite long.  According to Executive Director Jessica Robinson of the National Council on Alcoholism in an article from WILX 10 News, “You know that treatment is important because the problem is growing," Executive Director Jessica Robinson said.  And, she said, treatment for meth addicts could take up to three years.”

When searching for help with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, it is important to find the right treatment center.  Every person is unique in their battle with addiction, hence it is critical to find a treatment center that will address their particular needs.  Many rehab centers treat addiction with a one size fits all mentality, but this is completely incorrect.  There are Michigan rehab centers out there that are going to tailor a program that is specific to the individual.
