Mississippi Drug Rehab Centers

When it comes to drug addiction, many people generally think with illicit substances such as heroin, cocaine, or crack. While these can all of course bring about addictions, the reality is that one of the largest addiction epidemics going on right now is from a legal drug. That substance being opiate painkillers. While, opiate painkillers of course serve an extremely important medical purpose within our society, they can be very addictive. Several states are dealing with the epidemic of this drug. While not yet reaching the levels of several other states, Mississippi officials have begun to express concern that their state could end up with a widespread problem on their hands.

The Current Situation in Mississippi

The concerns instead arise from the numbers of prescriptions for these substances. According to the Daily Journal, “Most troubling, health, law enforcement and mental health leaders say, is the high rate of opioid prescriptions in Mississippi. A 2014 CDC analysis found that Mississippians received prescription pain pills at a rate of 120 prescriptions per 100 population.”

Mississippi currently does not have anywhere near the amount of prescription overdose deaths that many other states do. The Clarion Ledger states, “In 2014, Mississippi reported 336 drug overdose deaths, but Dowdy believes that figure understates the problem.” So while the numbers could be considered low in comparison with many other states, the massive number of prescriptions being given could easily lead to higher levels of addiction. The article gives a statement from Dr. Scott Hambleton, medical director of the Mississippi Physicians Health program, “The belief that opioid addiction is rare among patients being treated for chronic pain is not true, he said. “The rates of misuse and aberrant drug-seeking behaviors are between 15 and 26 percent.”

An unfortunate truth is that many who are addicted to prescription painkillers often end up moving over to using heroin. This is due to several different reasons. For one, heroin as an opiate is almost chemically identical to painkillers and so provides the same effects. The other factor is that heroin is much cheaper, as well as more readily available than painkillers. When a person’s prescription is cut off, or they can no longer afford it, heroin becomes the alternative option that can easily be moved to. Fortunately, Mississippi has become aware of the potential danger of the current situation, which will allow them to better remedy it before it escalates.
